I'm a fan (and you should be too) because...Yo-Yo Ma not only is a class act, he is also compassionate towards his fellow man and woman. He has an endearing and personable character with a matching sense of humor. I first saw him several years ago on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson. I became a fan imediately. Watching him perform is like watching him eat, drink or speak. In otherwords, it was just plain old natural. I entered the contest to collaborate with him and although I didn't win the initial contest, I consider myself a winner. Afterall, he encouraged me to compose another piece of music. Coincidentally, I am involved in working on Dona Nobis Pacem with 2 groups...one vocal group and the other group is a flute choir and we are going to be performing Dona Nobis Pacem with my counter melody. Although I am not technical in the least, I also learned a little about recording online...I win.
I think that Mr. Ma has a diverse view of musical genres and I love his spirit when it comes to sharing music with all. Most of my musical friends are musically diverse and I couldn't imagine Yo-Yo being any different. I saw the inaguration at a school where I work as an educational assistant in the music department. Unbelieveably, I wanted to tell the class, "I know him". But I don't know him...it just feels as if I know him. Not only is this because of the contest but I few years ago, I wrote him through the prompting of a magazine interview. At the end of the interview it said that he would answer one inquiry from a ready. I had to take the chance in hopes that he would answer my letter. Several months later, there was a letter in my mailbox from Yo-Yo Ma. I framed it and from time to time, I show it off to my friends and students. I'm 'bout to take it out again for show and tell...it's past due.
Well, I am happy to have found this site and I want to share more. Now, it is way past my bedtime. I have to go. But I will keep in touch at this site. Night all.
