Cosmologist and astrophysicist Martin Rees points out that while recent scientific discoveries have helped us to better understand the universe, science often fails in helping us to comprehend the mysteries closest to us.

“Today, we can convincingly interpret measurements that reveal two black holes crashing together more than a billion light-years from Earth,” says Rees. “Meanwhile, we’ve made little progress in treating the common cold…”
