I'm a fan (and you should be too) because Yo-Yo Ma has been a hero of mine since I first started playing the cello as a small boy. His passion for music (of all varieties) reflects a Zen clarity of mind and spirit that is much needed in today's troubled times.
It is said that the cello resonates at a frequency conducive for healing. If you've ever seen an Emoto water crystal, you know that certain sound waves have a measurable effect on water. Since the cells of our body are mostly water, the effect of cello music on our own physiology and well-being cannot be ignored. (Can't think of a time when the CELLO didn't make me feel better)
Even Quantum Physicists use the "strings of cello" as an image to illustrate the complexity and beauty that is STRING THEORY.
It is my hope that Yo-Yo Ma's legacy and enthusiasm for the cello will continue with the next generation of musicians. He'll probably never know the extent of his influence on young cellists from all corners of the globe.
